Considering his success on the grass and with fillies in particular, you would be hard-pressed to find a graded stakes in that category east of the Mississippi that trainer Chad Brown has not won. Until Friday afternoon, the Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes presented by TwinSpires would have been one of those races.

The Edgewood, for 3-year-old fillies, was run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., one hour before the G1 Kentucky Oaks, also for 3-year-old fillies but contested on the main track at a distance of 1 1/8 miles.

Brown had the 2-1 favorite in the Edgewood, the unbeaten Justify filly, Hard to Justify, making her first start since winning the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in her third career race last Nov. 3 at Santa Anita. He also had a lesser regarded stablemate, the Irish-bred Dynamic Pricing, in the lineup of 11 fillies at odds of 8-1. And, as so often seems to be the case, the "other" Chad Brown won the Edgewood.

Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Dynamic Pricing was wide throughout the 1 1/16 miles of the Edgewood, run over yielding turf. But the daughter of Night of Thunder rallied past Way to Be Marie a few jumps from the finish to secure the victory by a half length.

Owned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, Dynamic Pricing covered the 1 1/16 miles on yielding turf in 1:44.10 and paid $19.82 on a $2 win bet.

Way to Be Marie, who took over the lead from pacesetter Maxisuperfly at the top of the stretch, held second by one length, with Dancing in Dixie flying late to be third. Maxisuperfly, who set most of the pace through fractions of :22.96, :47.90, 1:12.93, and 1:37.64, finished fourth. She was followed by Mo Fox Givin, Buchu, Pink Polkadots, Kalispera, Hard to Justify, Scalable, and Band of Gold. Pounce, Simply in Front and Ragtime Lady were scratched.

Bred by Epona Bloodstock Ltd., Dynamic Pricing was produced from the Dutch Art mare, Shemda, a seventh generation mare from the Thoroughbred breeding operation and the Aga Khan and Aly Khan. She was purchased at Tattersalls as a yearling at the Tattersalls October yearling sale for about $204,000.

Dynamic Pricing debuted with a nose victory at Aqueduct one day after Hard to Justify's Breeders' Cup victory, then returned to be third, beaten a half-length, in the G3 Sweetest Chant at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 3. She came off a disappointing seventh-place performance in the G3 Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs, then trained at Payson Park training center in Florida until shipping to Churchill Downs in late April to prepare for the Edgewood.

Inaugurated in 1983, the Edgewood was contested on dirt in its first 13 runnings, then moved to turf in 1998. The distance was changed from one mile to 1 1/16 miles in 2004 and has been run at that distance every year since, with the exception of the pandemic year in 2020 when run at a mile in September. It became a Grade 3 race in 2015 and upgraded to Grade 2 in 2020. Dynamic Pricing earned $291,400 for the victory, her second in four starts.
